ugh, avoid the 2.8 unless you're immediately doing a painful swap.

i've got an 85 S10 ext cab. 2.8, AT and over 267k on the odo. 2nd engine has 132k on it. on my third 700R4. But as long as i don't drive it like a camaro, it's been rocksolid and dependable. and I love my truck. ~19 mpg, and has ok power. it was my first and I still have it. you can do a 3.1 or 3.4 swap into it to get a bit more power. if it is carb, then GM performance has a HO 3.4 (160 hp, 190 tq; that's 4.3 #s) for around $2k. It's not the best motor by any means, but it'll do.

edit: and i do still love my little S10. I now have an Eddie Bauer Explorer that is way nicer, but it's not my S10.

minus well do a v8 swap for that cash.

    And that's not 4.3 #s.... 4.3 vin-W EFI motors in 4x4s were rated up to 195HP and 260LbsFt

sorry, i'm thinking mid 90's models. the 4.3s in the 3rd gens.

and yeah, the V8 swap is better for the money, but i like the idea of the uniqueness of the HO3.4. along with the fact that i could basically bolt it in. some of the guys on the S10 boards are doing the 4th gen camaro 3.4s for ~$1500, but i still see your point on the V8 thing.
