    OK

Getting married next month to my fiancee. We have a 2 year old daughter together. Everything's finally straightened out with her as far as the Navy goes (we recieve BAH etc....he's in Japan right now)

Since he's going back to Japan for a while after we get married...I'll probably be the one doing a lot of the stuff that needs to be done...but I have no clue WHAT needs to be done!

After we get married, what do I need to do? DEERS? Tricare? Do we need to do anything different with our daughter?

Advice (other than don't do it :p) would be appreciated

Please don't take this the wrong way but you might as well learn this now...
You are just the wife (some branches have a colder attitude about this than others), so most of "the work" will need to be done by him.

Part of this is because so many military marriages don't last and some of those "wives" have been bitches who have raped the military member for everything he was worth. Don't take it personally, that is just the way it is and yes, it can be damn frustrating sometimes.

Best Wishes for a happy future. Being a military wife can be a wonderful thing!!!!! :bigthumb:

you will need a power of attorney.. most of his coworkers will advise him not to do it.. but to get ANYTHING done bill wise you will need one.. Most of the tricare/ deers/military stuff can be done by him in Japan.

    Otherwise enjoy the wedding :)

To piggy back on greenpillow, :naughty:, a general power of attorney only goes so far. You will have a very hard time doing anything that deals with finances with a general power of attorney. You should get a general one and a specific one for finances if you think you will need to transfer large sums of money, sell a house, apply for joint credit, etc.

I have power of attorney on everything :wiggle:

I do know what you are talking about as far as me being 'just the wife' goes though....

I wont be able to go to Japan because he's getting out next year (jan 5 2010) and we don't have enough money (storage etc) for us to move over there for only a year....

Thanks for the well wishes though! That's a lot more than I was expecting :)

I'm in the same boat as you (except I'm the service member in Japan. USAF.) Going home later this month to marry my fiancee. If you have any time after the wedding before he goes back, you should be able to go over to any Naval Station and get your ID card as well as get enrolled in DEERS in a day or two. Hell, if you want to come over here, you could schedule a military physical so he could start the process of Command Sponsorship as soon as he is back.

Don't forget to swing by finance to get his pay changed up. I've been told to have no less than 25 copies of the marriage cert. for all this. Also, again if you want to come over here make sure you get your Passport.

PS Japan (at least Okinawa) suuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

    (ID, DEERS, etc...)

The AF base can help with anything DOD level. Anything that the Navy requires, will have to be done at a Naval Station.

Do I have to be there for that? Or can he take care of most of it himself?
