MMA Getting in to fighting? Where to go...

Discussion in 'OT Bar' started by Pen Is Mightier, Jul 26, 2008.

  1. I've always liked fighting. Been suspended 5 times for fighting throughout junior high / high school but those were just stupid brawls. My older brother's friend is a pretty crazy fighter and goes to a gym in the city (SF). However, how do I progress from stupid brawler to fighting in a gym where I won't look like a fool? I play-fight with this kid whenever he's over to learn moves and what not but that is not enough. They offer Jiu-Jitsu classes/fight nights at my gym (weights, not fight) and I plan on going to those starting this next week. :dunno:

Have you already purchased as much tapout clothing as you can afford? That is always the first step.

It's going to take time and practice. Don't think you're going to change overnight, although you will notice progression. Forget everything you learned in street fighting, that never taught Tank Abbott shit in his career.

well, at least he's coming in here with a humble approach.

either find an art (MT, bjj, boxing, wrestling if youre still in HS, judo, sambo) and run with that or go in to an mma camp in your area. theyll go slow with you at first so that you dont do anything stupid to hurt yourself or others.

Purchase the Marlon Sims tutorial; "How to be a real fucking fighter". It will step up your game like crazy.

step one: admit that you know nothing and suck.
step two: attend reputable mma school.

step three: be a jack of all trades and master of none. youre going to lose to all the guys that have developed a strong base for themselves in a single art first.

  9. How can I find/look for an MMA gym?

Appreciate the real replies not filled with faggotry.

    .

Honestly when I go out to a club there is always a douche there with his Tapout shirt. In December when I went out with my training buddy and this girl was mackin on me (gf wasn't there) I looked over at my buddy and he was trying to work this girl, but there was this guy with a tapout shirt talking obviously to him. I asked him wtf that was all about, and he was like "I dunno man I was trying to dance with this chick and this guy kept talking about where he was training and when he's competing. He also thought I was a pro fighter and he saw me on Tuf"

Most gyms offer a free week or at least a free lesson so use them before you decide. Just go around, make sure it's close enough that you'll actually go. Don't sign up for a ridiculous amount of time either.

Just go and check it out anyway, usaully they will give out a 1 day trial. I been to gyms that look real grimsley but the trainers there were awesome, real down to earth and it was organized just the way i like it, very liberal open ended training. Sometimes a better looking gym might not be the better value...sample them out first. Or shit..I just perfer what ever gyms closer to me cuz i hate to travel anywhere further then 5 miles from my apartment.

how the instructors teach and the atmosphere of a place is way more important than what the gym looks like in pictures.

Forget both of those schools, go learn BJJ and learn one martial art and then start thinking about branching out.
