Since my lighting background has come from movies, I thought I would try some lighting tricks I've learned. Unfortunately I'm restricted to available light and my built in flash, but I'm trying to make the best of it. I took this one earlier today. I used my built in flash and blocked it with my hand to not get direct flash on my cat. Doing that also directed the flash to a yellow greeting card envelope next to him providing an interesting bounced key light.

I'd like to hear what you have to say about this one.

thats a cool shot. It looks like golden hour sun from a window. What kind of camera do you have? with some of them you can adjust the flash power

I have a 30d. I usually set the FEC to -2 when I'm indoors or working with low light. Even with that setting, it still just throws light onto the subject killing the contrast and making things very flat.

hm...yea i get that, outdoors I have read to set the fec and ec to -2/3. it seems to work well, but I really have no idea why. I can't compute it

So many different expressions with just one shot, I really like it.

    WOW, very nice shot.
I'll hafta try using that "trick" next time I'm shooting something up close.

 pic. Subtle lighting ftw. You said your lighting background is in films. Are you a DP or gaffer?

Professionally I'm a Key/Dolly Grip. I do a lot of gaffing and cinematography for students and small independents though, since that's what I'd like to do professionally.

 I'm still working towards shooting or gaffing bigger films, but for now I'm becoming one of the best dolly grips in Austin, which lets me work with a lot of DPs, and I'm learning a ton.
