I've been training for about 4 months at a MMA gym and yesterday I held thai pads for a guy who was 200 pounds and about 5'11''-6'.

Anytime i've held pads for anyone i've never felt pain but this guy swing kicks were so hard they were penetrating the pads, i didnt want to be a wuss so i kept on holding the pads despite the pain. I guess the adrenaline and endorphines helped fight away the majority of the pain.

Anyway this morning i woke up and my fore arms are bruised to shit.

I dont know how much your body adapts to this kinda stuff but can i take enough damage over a long time that my body doesnt bruise or become sore?

I know bones re-calcify to become stronger if there are micro cracks but i dont know about the fleshy meaty parts of my forearms.

If not physically, i hope mentally i can take more pain.

No never do that, they'll come right in your face and you'll eat a fucking kick force of your own fucking forearms. Take my word for it, happened to me once, fuckin hurt

You can brace for it more I guess. Or just not hold the pads for him because it's going to happen every time. That's just a sign that guy has solid kicks.

I don't know any guys that are 5'2, I do kind of wonder how well they could take punishment though

don't let him get away with it. hit his legs with the pads so that it hurts him more when he kicks. also aim it at his foot instead of letting him kick with his shin. make him reach a little further for it

Well if it's just pad work I don't think you should be making it harder for him, but if it's drills or something in a ring then ya. I would get fucking pissed if the guy holding my pads moved them. I'd be more likely to miss and actually kick them. I think it's a good idea to do that every now and then so it's a bit challenging, but I wouldn't recommend making him reach.

yea sometimes it hurts if they have a super strong kick, or they hit the pads unevenly

yes, your arms will eventually show less bruising and get conditioned to the beatings they take.

I'm not saying to move them as you go, I'm saying keep them further at the start.

We had really shitty pads at the MT place I went to so anyone who could kick busted up your forearms. I was black and blue the first month and by the second month they wouldn't bruise at all and hurt a lot less.

You were lucky. I think they gave us dishwasher sponges wrapped in very thin fake leather. Most of them only had 1 working strap.

lol, it was like the biggest martial arts gym in chicago. Their MT program wasn't the most important one I guess. There were some good pads but people would sneak in early to grab em and put them on the side for themselves. Most serious people brought in their own stuff.

I've been places that had those kind of pads before, they suck so much:rofl:

It would be a decent pillow, but nothing you want to catch kicks with.

make sure you're holding correctly. other than that your body will get used to the punishment. i remember when i first started working at my gym i could only hold pads for a few ours before my arms were completely dead. i can go all day now even with the hardest hitting guys.

Holy shit, the both of you should never give advice on holding pads. You're going to seriously hurt yourself or others.

its true though, if soemone started moving the thai pads down to my foot I would crack them in the leg as hard as I could the next kick.

kidding, i would never let someone that stupid hold pads for me.

I thought it was weird at first and got annoyed, but it helped me develop a better kick
