So can anyone tell me a little about effective techniques to cram more powder into a small case? I decided to try out varget under 55gr bullets in .223. I planned on making 25, 25.5, 26, 26.5, 27, and 27.3 loads and shooting them all for groups and going with the best for a larger run.

In practice I found that getting 25.5 gr in the case was about the best I could do and then I had to tap the case on the table a little and was pouring into the funnel from the powder pan from a slight height. Will a funnel with a drop tube let me get all the way up to 27.3 or is that just unrealistic?

I don't reload .223, but if the power won't fit, then I'd reduce the load. Unless you really know what you're doing.

Have to drop 3/4's of the powder, compress and then drop the remaining. Understand you are shooting a compressed load so make sure you do your due dilligence. Check the OAL of your rounds and make sure you have no shorties. Examine your brass after for signs of overpressure [cracks, primer flow, headstamp flattening]

I'm staying to just under saami max at 2.255 and working up in small steps. Does it matter what you compress it with or how you do it? Just a small piece of dowel rod and crunch it down some?

Hold a match to the open end. That'll cause the powder to shrink a bit...:hsugh:

This is a load from a manual and not just your idea, right?

If you get some varget sometime weigh some out and fill a .223 case, its quite filling. Hodgdon's own data for this shows 27.5C max and 25 is about filling the entire mil case. I think you'd have to try really hard to blow yourself up with a 55gr and varget.

That makes sense, I was just hoping you weren't trying to cook up your own recipe or something like that :o

There is really only so much you can do with a 55 grain fmj. With a 55 I would not go over 25 grains of AA2250. I reserve the good stuff (varget) for the 69+ smk's. It's like giving chicks the Stone IPA and finding half full beers left around yo pad.

Its all gun powder right?

I also have made loads with the 75gr hornady bthp on 22.5, 23, 23.5, 24, 24.5, 24.8gr Those should be much more fun I think :big grin:

I'd cry, although I was always a dogfish head guy :big grin:

When I started reloading my friend asked if I was going to make him some "hot loads". His idea was that because you can shake a lot of rounds and hear the powder shift that it just makes sense to load your own right to the top. :hsugh:

My 9mm and 223 are compressed loads. It's a matter of how much I can fit in the case then how much mo'.

For all the grief people give 40 my major load is less than half the case.

I think I looked at the load book about 20 times after I poured bullseye into a .38 special case  Surely that can't be enough!
