Gegard Mousasi vs. Vitor Belfort at Affliction III

May 26, 2009 by Cory Brady

One of the best pound for pound fighters on the planet Gegard Mousasi has confirmed to www.M-1Global.com that his next opponent will in fact be none other than “The Phenom” Vitor Belfort.

The two are expected to face off at the third Affliction event that has been rumored for August 1.

Mousasi revealed his next opponent in an interview with M-1 Global shortly after his decisive submission victory over Mark Hunt at DREAM 9.

“Yes, those (rumors) are true and I will be fighting Vitor Belfort,” said Mousasi when asked about the bouts widespread speculation for an August 1 Affliction card.

Mousasi also discussed the factors behind his decision to move up to heavyweight, his recent victory over Mark Hunt and much more in the exclusive interview at www.M-1Global.com.

To read the interview in its entirety CLICK HERE.

Mousasi has put together a beyond impressive record of 25-2 during his mixed martial arts career while compiling victories over Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, Hector Lombard, Melvin Manhoef, and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza to win the DREAM middleweight championship in the process. The same championship he recently relinquished to pursue a career in the heavyweight division. Mousasi has won his last 12 straight contests.

Belfort has recently rediscovered himself since 2007, racking up four consecutive wins in impressive fashion with his most recent being a devastating knockout over top rated middleweight Matt Lindland at the second Affliction card that took place in January of this year.

Vitor made a statement in Tatame that he would ONLY take the fight at 185. He said if Gegard wants to move to 205, he wishes him well but Vitor is a 185'er.

Vitor has his work cut out for him. Both great fighters, but Gerard will take this by unanimous decision.

besides denis kang, who is known for getting caught, mousasi hasn't really fought a complete fighter like vitor who has fast and powerful striking and is a bjj black belt

but it'll be a good fight IMO

i don't remember him ever having to use it, but if the fight were to go onto the ground like against Hunt or Manhoef, he wouldn't be as much of a sitting duck

Vitor is as one dimensional as they come. Stand in front of you and trade. Whoever goes down first, loses.

Yes, he's got his BB in BJJ and has for a long time. But he never takes fights to the mat and is rarely taken down.

This will be a boxing match. Gegard will KD him.

I hope Vitor keeps his ground and doesn't move up in weight. Hes just settling into 185 and this could throw him off.

Belfort's black belt is hung up in some Brazillian Taquerria right next to Wanderlei's, never to be seen again.

4 out of 5 times i'd say Gegard takes it, but Vitor's freak strikes may make this a big upset.

it'd be an upset, but i don't think it'd be a big one
mousasi said he won't fight at 185 because he won't be able to make that weight anymore
