i get TERRIBLE gas mileage, like 10-15mpg on my 1996 jeep cherokee
    its a 4.0L inline 6
it has a factory towing package, ive heard that might affect mileage

that sounds about right for cherokee's, I've owned 2 and got right around there in mileage. My friend has a 96 cherokee country and he said he gets about 12.

Strange....I had an 89 Cherokee LE, inline 6, aftermarket towing package, no raise, and I got 15-19 on a regular basis.

I do drive like a grandma, though.

I find it a little strange also.

    98 Cherokee Classic, IL6 stock.

I have read a number of Jeep boards and it seems that there are two groups of gas mileage, the 10-15 mpg group and the 15-20 mpg group. There are a few that claim a little higher but that seems to be the most common.

I'm starting to wonder if there is some common failure on the IL6 that causes a 5 mpg drop. A plugged tube, a sensor not working right etc.

I like my Cherokee. It's not the fanciest and some things are a little quirky sometimes, but overall, it's a decent vehicle for what I need and how much I paid for it.

Your gas mileage depends on how you drive it. Don't accelerate so fast. If you're flooring it at every stoplight, your mileage is going to suck. Same as with any car.

a worn o2 sensor and a need for a tune up will kill mileage.
