My psychic side says you acquired these MP3s over P2P networks? Maybe Kazaa flavored?

Its like an urban legend (hmm, "Internet Legend?" - you heard it here first!) that the RIAA has been involved at some level to distort or make really crappy quality MP3s (crappy enough you want to go out and buy the CD). It makes sense. Don't know if thats the case (is it possible there's a flock of computer users with really bad CDROM drives?)

Its also possible, but I doubt, the data is corrupt. Either from being "transferred" or your storage medium (CD or hard drive) is on its way of going. If its doing it for all MP3s, then you may need to start looking at your sound card or hard drive/CDROM as the cause.

We really need to know if it is doing this for all MP3s or just some of them.

Chances are it's bad files from P2P.

yeah the RIAA is garbling songs, you hear like the first 30 seconds or so and then you hear a loud screeching noise, they are just making it harder for people to get a song they want to listen to. The just want you to buy the cd.
