Does anyone think that it would be beneficial if apple were to introduce a desktop that was around $1k-1.4k, had the same form factor as a mac pro, with more power than a mac mini, and didn't come integrated into a monitor?

The iMac is a great product for anyone who needs an all-in-one computer, but I'd like to get rid of my PC and keep my own monitor and input devices.

I realize that the mini is available for less than $1k, but I need a bit more power.

    Your thoughts?

it's be nice, but it would probably canibalize sales of the iMac

I swear my buddy and I had this exact same discussion yesterday...

A kind of cheap tower in the same case, and then be able to say to your friends. "oh yeah, it's top of the line". :mamoru:

An iMac with a FW800 port would rock, but then people wouldn't be forced to buy mac pros.

Couldn't you just get an iMac, hook it up to your monitor and use it with dual screens?

I would like to see a machine of equivalent power to the iMac but without the integrated monitor but I don't expect that to happen.

I'm pretty sure that doing that doesn't look nearly as cool as having a matching pair of big displays.....In fact I'm sure whenever I've seen that I've thought it looked ugly.

I don't think so. It does lack in the gaming department, but in all honesty, I think they could work on the video drivers and improve there. I don't remember the GMA950 graphics being that bad in XP.

The graphics is a serious Achilles heel in the mini and macbook, man if they just put some dedicated graphics cards in there them shits would rock!
