For about a year and a half, I've been using a 4 megapixel, Nikon Coolpix 4500 to take my photos. Overall, things have worked out pretty well for me, as I've gotten some shots that I really do love. However, I think it's time to put it to bed and get myself a more advanced camera.

One of the things I always hated about having a little camera like the 4500 was just how unprofessional it looked. Whenever I go to a show at the > 1500 people clubs in Philly, I wind up going backstage, and typically like to speak to the bands and get set up with a small photo shoot, whether it be pre-arranged with the publicist or not. While 90% of bands agree to it, it's easy to tell that the camera makes some of them think of me as just a crappy Internet guy, as I'm typically a very professional when I'm around them. Plus, as of late, I'm taking notice of myself being more and more dissappointed in my shots.

    So what I need/my question...

    a) Under $1000

    b) Over six megapixels.

    c) I need something that looks like a very professional camera. I love the lens cover on DSC-F828 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3830083936&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT) because it just looks great, though I'm not entirely too sure if that's the camera I want after reading some bad reviews of it.

    d) When it comes to the F828, would someone in my position (as a concert photographer, shooting mostly in flash allowed, dark areas) really need to be worried about the flaws that people have mentioned about it? Right now I'm in the process of learning more about shooting with different features when using no flash.

    e) While I don't need anything extraordinarily and indecently bright, the camera I get needs to have a generally bright flash.

    f) http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikoncp8700/page3.asp Just figured I'd post that as it has five of the eight megapixel cameras available.

I'm going to head over to Ritz Camera tomorrow and check out a few models.

    Any advice?

    Some of my favorite shots...

Well, for one, a friend of mine is starting up a music magazine and I feel that I have a greater chance of selling some shots (whether it be to him or someone else) if I get myself a better camera.

And as an incentive for helping me... Better camera = more professional = less creepy when taking jailbait photos at the SAC events as it'll look like I'm doing it for the yearbook :hs:

The Nikon D70 gets very decent reviews. I've made a thread about it at the bottom of this page. Was kinda hoping someone would reply to it though :( In the UK the cheapest I've seen it for (body only) is £719. There is a review of it in the Digital Camera buyer magazine. Dunno if their site actually contains reviews too but it's www.paragon.co.uk (might just be a publishers site, I've not looked).

I would love to get the D70, but it's $300+ above my price range.

Buy a used camera if you can stand that.

    I'm a Canon whore, so...

Canon EOS D30/60, EOS D2000 (cheapest DSLR). You can spring a new Canon Digital Rebel for under $1000.

    of the 8 megapixels:
The sony is the fastest lens, and reaction time, best movie mode
The canon has the best lens, but slowest autofocus and a strange design
the nikon has the slowest lens, (needs a lot of light) but has the most zoom
the olympus has a really good lens, the best body, but least zoom and strange functionality
the minolta is the overall best one, good lens, consecutive raw file capability, image stabilization, pc flash terminal, by far the best viewfinder

What is "that?" The Coolpix 4500?

And yeah, I have been thinking about checking out the Digital Rebel.

If I end up buying/returning two or three cameras from Ritz to find the perfect one, I'm going to have to buy the final one there too. I'll feel like a real dick if I go online after doing that to them a few times :hs:

    Thanks

Do you know of anything you can add to the Minolta similar to that :coold: lens cover that was on the EBay auction for the Sony?

That of owning a used camera. :o

Ritz overprice their cameras. I only go there to buy film and batteries.
