hey all... I had previously been using Trillian basic, but saw that several people here recommended Gaim so I decided to give it a shot. I have a couple questions.

does updating the buddy list(s) in Gaim update the actual server for each service?

Is anyone else having trouble with MSN? I try to connect and gaim crashes.

I do not use the Gaym.

I use AOL Instant Messenger exclusively (I'm old enough that AOL IM was the only choice beside IRC when I started chatting), and I simply let my friends run all different manner of IM programs instead.

Get GAIM 2.0.0 beta 5 or 1.5.0 stable, they shouldn't crash.

I <3 GAIM. Only multi-protocol IM program that doesn't limit me to one or two OSes that are no good to me.

1.5.0 DOES crash. I just downloaded it less than 2 hours ago. Went to the download page and got the latest stable version.

Everything works perfectly, as far as I can tell, until I try to connect with MSN. I then get the "Gaim.exe encountered serious error must shut down, blah, blah, blah"

    That's for the betas.

What version of Windows are you using?

    It should work :/
You COULD try 2.0.0beta5 if you wanted, I find it a lot nicer anyhow, and it's been stable for me.

xp pro, sp2, installed yesterday. yeah... I'll probably give it a shot later. I rarely use MSN anyway, but for the 3 people I have on it it would be worth having running.

Gaim was crashing when I connected to MSN for a while, there was a patch on the website though. I didn't read this thread, you may already have fixed this :dunno:

Weird the amount of crashing you guys are getting..
I've run it for years on GNU/Linux and a bit on Windows (not that much though) and I haven't seen it crash that much (although, I certainly have seen it crash), and I use MSN 100% of the time.

Just tried again, MSN enter name/password, click to connect and it goes through the steps like it's going to connect, gets to the end and crashes.

I haven't had a chance to download the newest beta yet. I'll try that later/tomorrow.

wait... what? aim, win live messenger? The entire point of using Gaim or Trillian is to have 1 program running to manage all messenger clients. Why would I possibly want to use more than 1 program, thereby defeating the purpose.

I upgraded to the latest beta the other night and MSN is working great since then.
