I've been checking out some new lenses for my Olympus SP-310 and I keep finding these supposedly cheap kits on eBay which feature Telephoto and Wide Angle lenses, plus maybe some filters or a case or somthing.

Should I be careful in choosing these kits? Are there some things I should look for to ensure a quality product? Specifications that make a difference?

Just for an example, here are two of the auctions I was looking at

    http://cgi.ebay.com/3X-LENS-DELUXE-KIT-FOR-OLYMPUS-SP-310-SP-350-CAMERA-NEW_W0QQitemZ7620145967QQcategoryZ116189QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Of course there's also the option of buying the pieces individually considering I don't need all of the pieces in the kit

    :dunno:

I understand your analogy but I am a n00b to this whole thing obviously. You can call it a Kia but I don't have shit to compare it to, i.e. a BMW or Lexus

Man I would just buy the proprietary lenses made my Olympus but their telephoto lens only adds 1.7x max zoom :( I want 3x or higher personally

Sorry, I know nothing about Olympus gear. Most here are part of the Canon or Nikon crew.

Yah had I bought the camera myself I would have gotten a Canon or Nikon probably, but I'm actually pretty happy with it, and now I'm looking to increase it's capabilities, hopefully cost-effectively.

I didn't pay for the camera, and I'm definitely not going to spend nearly enough out of my own pocket that I could have bought a 30D.

Ok well I ordered a 37mm lens adapter, so whenever I get that I will eventually go to a local camera shop and try to find a suitable lens or two :dunno:

You will be unimpressed with anything you add on to a P&S camera. If you are interested in adding lenses then save your money and get an SLR. Otherwise forget about the add-on lenses they are not worth your time.

I can't afford a decent SLR. Getting a free camera is the only basis for me wanting to upgrade it any further.

The best ones are probably the manufacturers parts.

And if your keen on photography & dont have the budget, go buy somones film kit on ebay when they upgrade to digital.

It's like getting a Honda Civic LX from your parents. You have the urge to upgrade to bigger wheels, a body kill, Altezza rear lights, a stereo system, exhaust, intake, and so on. After all that is said and done, you spent $5000 modifying a slow economy car that still only runs 16.4 in the quarter mile and pulls 0.81g on the skid pad.

    You could've bought a 20D and 3 L lenses with that $5k!

DSLRs are so bulky and heavy though... I like the smaller form factor of this camear. Plus it was a gift and I don't think my mom would appreciate it too much if I went and sold it less than two weeks after I got it.

I'm only wanting to invest about $100 or less on this thing, for a telephoto lens and a couple of filters at the most :hs:

You might as well flush that $100 down the toilet because you will not be happy with the results. You will end up not using the attachments that you buy. Anyway you should have titled this thread "Gah I am buying shitty parts for my P&S" instead of asking a question and not listening to the answers. (Everyone who has replied to this has told you the same fucking thing.)
