I'm heading to Afghanistan for 12 months and I'm looking for something smaller than my 20D to take along for the ride. Would you guys recommend the G11 for a quality camera to keep in my pocket, or is there something smaller/cheaper that can deliver the same quality out there?

s90. But don't expect miracles. It's still a point and shoot.

Details? The S90 is actually looking better than the G11 right now.

same sensor, less controls, optical zoom . . .

That's the best pro for this camera. And it's $75 less than the G11. Looks like I'll be ordering it tomorrow.

G11 is nice, but I think its too bulky to carry around and when you're in combat I'd hate to have to lug it around. get something smaller and more shock proof, like the D10 P&S

That sounds life threatening, what would you be doing there?

I'll be part of a training team, working with the Afghan National Army Air Corps. Teaching them electrical systems maintenance and a few other things. It should be a bit less dangerous than the standard army deployment, which is fine with me, being Navy and all.

12 months in the sandy desert, i'd look for something sealed. This means you give up zoom, but that's a decision you'll have to make.

The s90 is nice, but I have a feeling with all the dust that will get kicked up, it'll get inside and then you'll have a nice dusty p&s.

The IQ isn't even close to a G11 but the Tough-8000 from Olympus has lived up to it's name with me.

I was really close to ordering the Lumix but I'm a Canon guy at heart, so I went with the S90 and a nice case :o

I really wanted the features and IQ. Can't wait to play with it  I'll just have to be a bit more careful with it out there, but I think it'll do just fine.
