I used to run a forum, and one of my admins got into a bitch fight with an admin of a popular hacking forum, and he single handedly kept my forum that was on a dedicated server btw, down for 17 hours straight.

I think for a decent filtering service you're looking at $100+/mbit 95th of clean traffic... obviously depends on where you are. In London it's nearer $200/mbit. Prolexic are a big one.

What kind of traffic SYN, UDP, Full TCP connections?

    How many source IPs?

You can usually work with your ISP upstream providers to have them blackhole IPs.

If its more of a CPU intensive attack there is some mitigation you can do on server side if you have VM or physical box.

exactly... my dc is setup with BGP between all of my uplinks.. easy to slide traffic around, blacklist ips, etc.

What routers are you using? A proper DDoS (i.e. tens of millions of small packets from thousands of different hosts) will fuck your shit up :o
(When I say "your" i'm not meaning you specifically - i mean basically anyone that hasn't got a ridiculous amount of network capacity in place, which is just wasteful most of the time :o)
