So, there is a project that I might get involved with, and the only way to achieve it in a timely manner is to use a .NET library. I have some Java experience.

We are a MS-free shop. We use Solaris, Apache, MySQL, Perl. We develop for firefox, then convert to IE.

I know I can learn .NET/C# and use this stuff fairly easily because it looks just like Java. My question is... do you think I can handle coding .NET and using Windows, if I fucking hate Microsoft systems and software? I really don't enjoy using their stuff at all.

Is it that bad? I'm not really a Java guy. I'm a perl guy. I just know Java from doing Eclipse apps.

You know you can access the Windows API directly, yeah? Go on www.allapi.net and look there for libraries that can do what you need.

What are you trying to accomplish? Seems like anything you'd need .NET for you could use JNI or a COM bridge and still do the majority of your coding in Java.

.NET and VS 2005 are awesome. I've been programming with .NET for about 3 years now, give it or take. I've Java/C/C++ experience, plus all the standard non-compiled (php/perl/etc). C# by far is the best for a lot of things. Web and low-level programming excluded of course (aspx sucks badly, and this is from someone who develops in it regularly). Windows apps are ultimate in .NET though. Super easy, and very quick.

Oh and C# > Java in pretty well every respect.

    http://www.mono-project.com/ ?

I'm doing my cross-platform project in Mozilla (XULRunner), love it. XPCOM (cross platform component object model), XUL, XBL, CSS, Javascipt (where most of my programming and scripting is done.. in XPCOM components, accessible from other JS and Python, Perl, C/C++........), all the Mozilla web APIs...

Ya, I was just starting to get used to his "ways". :noes:

He'll rip everybody a new one here and there, but at the end of the day he always has advice to offer.

That's better than most of the trolls in offtopic.

He's around... just doesn't post in C&P anymore. Might be better for his blood pressure that way.

You have repeatedly stated that I am a douche, little kiddie... but let me just say, that millions of dollars is a reason for anyone to get over their technological preferences ;) Obviously this is a situation that you have never, and will never, be in. :big grin:

Thats the most impressive thing about VS that I saw. Intellisense won't let you misuse this library we might use. It warns you. It is more advanced than Eclipse.
