It accelerates the drying up of part sources though. Its a lot like a buyback also IMO.

Sounds like a gun buyback. They make it sound like they're getting polluting cars off the street, but the ones turned in will be the ones sitting in garages and not actually in use. Just like guns, under the veil of getting criminal guns off the street, they take in a bunch of relics sitting in closets and mistakenly call it a victory.

    Fucking Libs

I don't really see the problem? I mean, other than another stupid ass government program.

You think those same people wouldn't sell the same car to a scrap yard? You think a scrap yard is going to keep around an old clunker because it might have some parts some person wants? Or do you think they'll crush it, and sell it because we're letting other countries buy up all of our metal?

some people sell their cars for scrap and others sell them to u pull it type salvage yards. either way the seller stands to make the same amount of money but a .gov program to turn cars into scrap could easily screw over the u pull it type yards.

    1. Not the Gov business.

    2. Fixing older cars and keeping them on the road is recycling.

    3. Older cars are cheaper and provide transportation for lower income people.

    4. That's exactly what a scrap yard does, I've probably spent more time in salvage yards collecting parts then doing most anything else.

    5. Lots of cars have been getting crushed for the weight in steel and tons of valuable hard to find parts have been turned into coke cans.

    1) I already agreed with that point.
    2) Not denying that point.
    3) Irrelevant to my point.
    4) Also irrelevant to my point.
    5) That was my point, irregardless of a government program (which I am still against) it's a problem. And you're kidding yourself if you think this is realistically going to change anything.

Not really, it depends on if you are a car guy or not. We've been fighting this type of legislation for years.

:dunno: I consider myself a car guy, I just don't see this honestly affecting much more than wasting more tax money and getting rid of cars that people weren't selling for parts anyway.

Exactly, people will use it to get some government cash for the junk that has been rusting in the driveway for 10 years and thats about it. It isn't like people driving $400 beaters that use more oil than gas are going to run out and buy a prius because they can trade their junker in for a tiny amount of credit. People are driving junky cars because they can barely afford them.

sounds like it's time for an LS6...

I changed the rod bearings on my 93 SHO:mamoru: a couple weeks ago. it isn't too bad. kinda scary getting into the bottom end of the motor the first time, but not hard at all.

replacing the stripped manifold to y pipe studs was more time consuming and a bigger pain in the ass.

with the spun bearing you'd have to get the crank and maybe even the block machined so when everything is said and done it'd be around the cost of a motor. good machine work isn't cheap.

    ouch. it'll be alright.

yea, but not THAT much. i'd say machine work alone wouldn't be more then $500. bearings are cheap. LS6 is anywhere from $3-5K

It's an option. I took it to a shop, with a bunch of good parts, new pistons, crank, etc. Sent it to the machine shop, got it back and he said the block was cracked now. So I've either got to get a block (I found one from a friend for $350) and get it pieced back together or get a crate motor.

Right now I just want it back together so I can sell it, I think this car is cursed :wtc: I think I may go the route with the new block, sell it and move on. Maybe get an LS1 vette or something else :dunno:

I know people that have paid 3500 for machining. They had a lot of extra stuff done to it though. He's running 16 PSI of boost though so he needed to have more done to it.

I know bearings are cheap. i got a kit with gaskets, bearings, RTV, and a plastigauge for about 70 bucks. cheap insurance.
