Well I just got done talking to my uncle who is gay, and I thinking coming out to my parents is going to be alot harder than I thought.

My dad once said to my uncle about 17 years ago the two things he hates in this world are "commies and fags", but my mom has said that she would be accepting if one of her childern were gay.

I am definatly going to wait till I get a boyfriend to come out to my parents now.

You never know, he could have changed his views in those 17 years?

don't you think having a gay brother would open your pops up a little bit?

also, come out before you get a bf or your parents will just blame him and never accept him.

i waited until i was completely independent and didn't need any support from my parents before coming out, that way if they had a problem with it i could have just been like "peace out bitches"

thats something to think about if you feel that your parents disowning you is a major possibility. Financial stability and independence before coming out. sad that so many have to achieve this before they can live the life they want.

I also think that you shouldn't take ANYTHING your father said 17 years ago as relevant now.

OH yeah I have to agree with that...My Dad blamed my first. Come out to your Mom first so you can build up support, tell her to help you with your father! Happy to hear that you can talk to your uncle though! That's great!

My mom is still in denial.

Well she recently moved out of the denial phase and into the live-your-life-in-the-closet phase, because that's what her generation was supposed to do.

Despite this and how frustrating it is, I still love her. Another 5 years and she'll but into the 90s, I think.

Yeah, my mom started questioning me recently about me and steve and even some of my friends have....When I told my mom I was going to Chicago this weekend with him she goes "you should be hanging out with girls, not boys, its like your in elementary school with a best friend again" and then she goes from saying how much she likes him to "Hes lazy and a bad influence on you" yet hes the reason ive lost so much weight....I think she goes through phases of acceptance and denial (or hate i guess?)..Still havent come out yet and dont know when in the hell im going to especially if I move home next year :(

    I did in another thread.

My mom actually said, "okey" and my dad was all like why do you feel that way, and I explained how I have no attraction to girls so on so forth, and then they asked what they can do, and said you can't do much other than vote for the right person and help fund gay rights organizations. I am going to ask my dad if he will give some money to my gsa.

Oh and the whole thing about my uncle, he said he never said that and maybe that my uncle was drunk or somethin and he thought he heard it, so I dunno.

But whatever it couldn't have gone any smoother

If you didn't live in Seattle I wouldn't believe your parents were that cool. That is really nice to hear there are parents like that out there :bigthumb:

17 years ago my dad hated blacks and wouldn't even allow a black friend in the house. Now, one of his best friends is black.

17 years is a long time.
