If you have external KB/Mouse hooked up you can.

It will initially sleep though, then just press a key.

InsomniacX is a program that works on intel macs. i tried it.

i just dont think its good for the computer, theres a reason why they did it (heat problems i'm guessing), its prob not good for the screen.

since processes are running, everything internally will be heating up anyways (cpu, harddrive, ram). basically turning your lcd all the way down to off will give you the same effect of what you want to happen when you close the lid...

your computer can't "sleep" and do those processes at the same time...
    sleeping stops everything...

The heat is bad for the screen because some of the heat vents up from beneath the keys, which means it is going directly onto the screen. (At least for G4 Powerbooks).

This is what my friend that fixes computers told me.

Because... everyone else WANTS it to sleep when we shut it, because otherwise our battery runs down and the screen cooks?

Just have your display go to sleep then password protect it coming out of sleep.

Yeah, seems like having the computer on and generating heat while the lid is closed is a good way to fuck up the screen.

i dont get it, cause on my windows laptop.. when i close the screen i have it set to just close the screen, so no heat is generated by the screen.. like i have an option of what i want to do (shut down, standby, etc) why not give have that option here

i think you're missing it...it's not that the heat is generated by the screen, is that since the screen is shut, it's keeping the heat trapped that the computer is making which is bad for a) the system b) the screen.

Get a cheap desktop machine to use as a file server and let it keep up your aim and torrents. There's no sense in wearing out an expensive notebook for that.
