So I had my first drill this weekend with my Reserve unit. I spent some time with the unit training NCO to get myself scheduled for AIT and PLDC. It turns out that my unit is converting from a light combat engineering battalion to heavy, and is reclassing all Combat Engineers (21B) to other MOS's. So I'll either have to find another unit that has a 21B slot open or reclass into a heavy construction MOS.

The catch is that my contract came with a bonus, and they have to send me to AIT for 21B. So they're going to send me to AIT for Combat Engineer, then PDLC, and then another AIT. I'll be getting my $15K bonus for a job that they don't want me to do. :ugh:

    This blows chunks. :madfawk:

Fuck no. It's the part time military. It's why I laugh at the Jarheads of OT that are in the Reserves. Do you really expect a unit that performs it's duties 2 days a month to run smoothly?

Well they just returned from a year in Afghanistan a little over a week ago, so that wouldn't really apply here. Yet. :coolugh:

I'm going to try for option # C. I'm thinking about taking my $15K and finding another Combat Arms MOS (and a different unit) to move to. :hsugh:

No, but I did expect that I would at least be able to perform the job I contracted for. I know that once I deploy I'm fair game for whatever needs to be done whenever it needs to be done. But while I'm here in the states I actually expected to learn something about what it takes to be good at Combat Engineering. :dunno:

In this instance, Air Force Reserve > Army Reserve.

I have two sons that are in the military. My Army son (21B Combat Engineer) returned from a year-long deployment in January and will be going back in December for another year. My Air Force son has just deployed for the second time to Iraq, and will be there for another 4 months. I don't generally worry much about the AF son, but the year that John was deployed was not fun. Every news report of dead soldiers in his area would be followed by days of wondering if the next knock on the door or phone call I received would be from the Army.

I know that my going into the Army doesn't mean that my sons won't be shot at or killed. But at least I'll be in the fight. (which is one reason why I'm so pissed about them trying to move me to a non-combat arms MOS).

For me, I think the bottom line is that I couldn't just sit back and do nothing while my sons were getting shot at.
