Why do you guys use PHP so much? I've never seen any PHP code that wasn't ugly as fuck all. It feels terrible to use. It fucking blows. But you guys seem to love it.

    Why do you like PHP?

php kicks the shit out of asp. I can't stand .net, so don't even bring that up. php is *similar* to c++ so that makes it comfortable to many people. it's fucking platform independent -- runs on everything. Runs on many web servers. Is fast and flexible. And as of PHP5 they are actually getting some decent object orientation going on.

What do you like? Don't fucking tell me perl, python, or asp.

Ruby is interesting, but I'm not really liking it.

PHP is easy to use, and powerful enough to do pretty much anything you'd use a scripting language to do.

And ugly code is the fault of the programmer, not the language.

Actually, thats not true. A language encourages certain styles by its syntax. And being that I hear people say that its always the programmer's fault... but actually all php code seems to be shit, I think you are wrong.

Python for instance, enforces good style as part of the syntax.

And yes, perl kicks php's ass at just about everything. And yes, my perl code is pretty and easy to understand. And yes, python is a better alternative than php for many things.

    you are a fucking dumbass.

Python is the WORST, and perl is an outdated piece of shit. PHP came out to (successfully) replace Perl.

RUBY ON RAILS > PHP :)

PHP is nice when done properly and the HTML is abstracted and it's all OO. If the designer does a great job and pre-plans everything on paper before touching code it can look decent.

It all goes back to the developer. I can write LISP/Python/Perl code that looks like shit, but works damn well.

I was really impressed with the way Ruby on Rails can have a simple web app up in minutes that would take hours to do in Java.

Perl for file parsing & scripting > *

Simple as that. Perl was design for that, and does a damn good job at it.

you need the right tools for the right job. Can't do efficient Windows Server Scripting in PHP and can't use VBS to script in linux can we?

Actually, you can do anything in perl. Its not a scriping language anymore... its a compilable, object oriented language with more free modules than any other language on the planet through the CPAN. And it is just as suited to CGI as PHP is.

Never said you couldnt, I was just making a point that you use the correct tool for the job. PHP isn't a sledge hammer that can pound everything in with. Sometimes you need that rubber mallet.

If you're gonna participate, try to justify your opinions in some way so its not just screaming:

    PEPSI!

    COKE!

    PEPSI YOU IDIOT!

    COKE YOU MORON!

    FUCK YOUR MOTHER!

    EAT MY ASS!

    WHAT WERE WERE ARGUING ABOUT!?

Honestly I can't think of anything PHP is good for. Like for instance if your application is longer than a single page.

As to perl, I'm just saying that it is a great tool for accomplishing just about anything. Especially if you need it done quickly. Thats why its the glue that holds together the internet.

Not in every circumstance. It's a good replacement for perl cgi scripting, but it can't replace perl across the board.

PHP is like perl with all the elegance in the syntax removed. When tooling with php it really bothers me that I'm not in C, and I'm not in perl... I'm in an ugly limbo in between.

When you express strong opinions you can't justify, you just end up looking like a know-nothing blow hard. Its kinda pathetic. And since you're the forum tattle tale I'll inform you more sternly: make a contribution, or the mods will be after you! OH NOES!

I personally don't like PHP, mostly because I don't deal with the Linux stack. I can understand both sides but for me, .NET is my choice of platform. ASP.NET has allowed me to do things I'd love to see done in PHP given the same time frame. ASP.NET offers me a fully object oriented development platform with great tools (VS 05) and I would say that's why I prefer it. Doesn't mean one is better than the other but it works for me.
