Ok if someone has a FTP site and they delete files from that site, where do the deleted files go? Are they permanently erased from the server?

    lemme give you my example:

I live at a apt near the university and the university allows us to store files on their server using FTP protocol (my login and password). I deleted some files and now I am unclear of what happened to those files. Someone told me that they stay on the university's server until the administrator deletes them every now and then. Is this correct?

It probably depends on the server. You are better off asking the admins because regardless you won't be able to recover it.

i think your only savior might be that the contents of the ftp site might be backed up. If so, just ask the admin if he might be able to pull the tape from when you last had the file on there.
