so in an effort to get my lil brother to get his act together at the end of the school year, I made a deal with him pertaining getting his grades up and me taking him shooting. Last time I took him, we went to a structured range, and what he seemed to enjoy the most was shooting the little reactive targets.

I found an outdoor range that's just open land, so figured I'd take him there with a basket full of items for plinking purposes. Any recommendations for the best stuff to plink.

    Will be shooting .22lr, 9mm, and .223.

    No tannerite.

Golf balls and paint balls for .22lr. Playing cards are cool too if you can get a good enough shot to split them in half.

Pumpkins filed with water work especially well in the fall. That won't help you right now though. Apples with a .223 are fun to see explode.

Also, the Quran *sp* seems to be a popular choice of plinking target as of late.

Empty soda cans and those big Foldgers coffee cans work pretty well.

My favorite thing to plink with are empty shotgun shells. There's thousands strewn around the shooting range I go to and I just shoot the ones on the ground and watch them fly around.

paint balls are fun to shoot .... if you can, get soem white poster board and tape paint balls all over it ... bro should like that if he likes reactive things .. paint splatter should make him giggle.

Would like to try to go with biodegradable things as I'll be shooting out in the forest and all. Not too worried about packing out a blown up cantelope, but I'd like to avoid cleaning up paint all over.

Most, if not all, paintballs are biodegradable. I like shooting potatoes.

as stated, almost all paintballs are biodegradable ... not too much to worry about with that ... and it will be a good show for him at the very least.

one of the most interesting things I've ever shot was a big can of sliced
    tomatoes.

When you hit it, it's a pretty energetic reaction. We had tomato sauce
dripping from branches 20' up and a cheap UMC 55gr 223 hollowpoint turned
the can completely inside out. It also briefly created a cloud of red mist. :)

we were using mom's woodpile as a backstop and it got drenched with tomato
sauce. She goes "what's going to happen when I burn that wood?" "It'll smell
like Macaroni Grill in the house?"

Is this really what you want to be thinking about when you're getting ready to shoot those cans? Better be careful and go with a whole fruit instead.

My fruit of choice would be Hollywood celebrities who think their fucking politics are worth more than the stinking half formed cesspool of shit they really are.
