so I want to incorporate Front and Overhead squats into my routine but not exactly sure how to get barplacement right for front squats and not exactly sure where the start position should be for the OH squats. Do I start OH squats like a front squat and then press the bar and do the squats or do I put the J hooks up high and start like that. I have a terrible OH press but can hold more than I can press so I was wondering what is the standard procedure.

You can use a snatch grip but i prefer to use the other method. Cross your arms with a hand above each shoulder and walk under the bar. The bar should be stabilized by both hands and resting on your arm/shoulders. Your arms are about perpendicular.

    edit: skeletor beat me :o

I use the same type of narrow stance (about shoulder width). I find it hits my quads more that way.

hmmm I'll give that hand position a go next time I'm in the gym. I really think front squats will help my squat. Plus it will be nice to change it up a bit.

no shit but he looks like he's at hip width.. I go to the shoulders or slightly wider.... that way I can go all the way down, he's really not getting a full ROM with the super close stance, as it appears.

I switched over entirely to front squats for the last month or so and I actually have more fun with them... but I'm going back to higher rep back squats on my next leg day so this will suck. I hope my squat is stronger now since I did supplemental quad work (quad strength = way behind).

My stance is the same...usually a 10lb plate apart... and I usually go ATG.

are you doing these squats so that you can improve your back squat? if so, then do it so that it carries over to your back squat. when front squatting don't squat narrow, squat a bit wider and get your hips involved. after all, you incorporate your hips in your back squat to you not?

keep your chest up and do it like a real man: clean grip. don't have the flexibility? work on it. i got in two weeks. and my wrists were dying with 135.

OH squats, walk it out like a back squat and press it up. your grip should be enough so that if you're holding, say, a wooden stick you can you can hold it in front of you, swing it over your head, and hold it behind you without changing the grip or bending your elbows. don't have the flexibility? work on it. cause if you need to dump it you want to be able to dump it both in front of you and behind you.

same thing, chest up, back straight. hold the bar over your traps so that your back supports it, and not over your head where only your shoulders support it. this squat will work the hell out of your core. but you'll get used to it.

i can make a vid tomorrow if u want

I can understand the front squats, but i dunno if i really see a point to do overhead squats often for a powerlifter at least.

For front squats, I just sorta find a shelf like back squats.
