We will be launching our free online dating site in less than 20 days. When our beta is near production ready, I'd love to invite you guys to use it and give me some feedback!

Here's one of the articles that inspired us:

yeah I was thinking of starting one as well. the only drawback I have is the fact that you need a starting database of people because people would not join a site that doesn't have anyone to search for.

seen all of those and dating is a HUGE market...just talking about the leaching of ideas on this specific forum lol ;). Not as many original ideas but lots of copycats. Fine for some things but others you don't need any extra competition so you have to watch what you say and who you talk to.

Even a small free dating site could do well though. And even if it doesn't make enough for you if you get any kind of decent traffic there is a decent chance you could sell off your db to one of the bigger networks.

I have an idea I like for one, but it's too saturated a market to try and join while I'm low on funding. After my current projects are done may consider it.

Hook me up with an invite. :coold:

I developed a dating engine three years ago. It was pretty basic but had the full functionality of a dating site to function. :o I should revise that project and try something with it.

We hope to have the site up on March 31st, I will try and post a dev url before then for you guys to check out. Less than 18 days and we still have to finish coding our groups functionality, check our CSS and XHTML for cross browser compatibility and cluster our servers :hsd:

There is no shortage of dating sites, it really comes down to knowing the industry, having industry connections, and marketing it correctly ;)

I don't give a fuck. I developed it to learn Smarty and PEAR. I didn't expect it to become a success. Infact I never launched it. Although I thought about selling as an engine for people who want a dating site. I'm a programmer, not much of a marketer. I leave those up to the douchebags who run that industry.

we have colocated machines. currently one db server and one litespeed server. surprisingly, our db server doesn't get hit too hard, as rails is pretty good with its queries. on the downside, rails is slow as fuck, so we'll be clustering that end of things soon. as is, we can handle about 150 connections per second.

just remember not to get ahead of yourself, sure its nice to build someting that can scale to a billion users, but for your market it'll take quiet a time before you'll be at that scale. Better to save on costs and stay alive, then spend yourself bankrupt before you cash in. When you end up needing to upgrade, at that point you'll be making the cash to pay for those upgrades.
