My friend's non-HDMI 20gb Xbox with BenQ driver (that's modded) sometimes won't open or read any discs (original or back-ups). I read some stuff online and it seems like some gears on the drive are bad.

Is there an easy fix to this? Or what replacement drive should he buy and where? He is out of the warranty.

buy a drive on ebay for about $25 and reflash it.

They are all pretty easy so just get whatever best deal you can find.

Make sure the faceplate isn't causing the drive to stick :dunno:

I had a BenQ non-HDMI that worked fine for 3 years and then I sold it when I got a newer LiteOn HDMI model for heck of a deal. What happened with your xbox, why isn't it working?

Thanks! I thought some might be more reliable than others.

Nope, we took the xbox apart to clean the drive and it was still doing the same thing.

    Bad flash?

If you flash incorrectly the drive stops responding to commands.

Hmm.. maybe? His drive had this issue before the flash and his drive was flashed the same way as other BenQ ones were.. JF in 32bit XP. It was working fine after flashing but then it started acting up more couple of weeks later.

Is it intermittent, or does it never open now? If the flash is bad, it will think everything, including legit games, are bad.

flick the door with your fingers while hitting the eject button.

and change it's position. Mine stopped reading discs while laying down so now it sits vertical.

At first it was intermittent but after we cleaned the drive, it didn't wanna open 99% of the time.

I gotta ask him how he had it sitting.. if it was horizontal I'll try the vertical thing before ordering another drive. Thanks broski.
