A friend of mine set up a wireless Netgear WGR614 in his room on the school's network. He's trying to use a LAN file-sharing program but is unable to connect. The software is only looking within the router and not out to the school's LAN. Another friend of his said he needed to set up the router as a gateway but neither of us know or can figure out how to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Seeker

I'm assuming your friend can still access the internet through the router, so it is already acting as a gateway. What he probably wants to do is setup the router as a bridge if that's possible (RTFM). It sounds like whatever app he's using cannot deal with network address translation.

You may need to enable the correct ports for this program to work correctly. Also, are you able to get out on the internet at all with this setup? The device that you are using is a cable/dsl router, depending on how the school network is setup, that also may be a problem. However if you can get out to the internet, it is might just a port problem. Here is how to enable port forwarding for your router (you will need to know what port the program is using though). . . http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101145.asp Hope this may help.
