Shit gunna need to be douched?

I've gotten him as far as the system menu with restore default, rebuild file system, rebuild database, etc.

Would like to resolve without having to douche the HDD on it if possible.

    Thoughts?

  2. mine did this not too long ago, turned out the bluray drive went bad. had to get a new ps3.

It's not everyone.. but if you google "ps3 won't read discs..." google suggests "after updates" which means many others have had the problem. The issue seems dated.

However, no one seems to know the fix. It looks as if a system douching might help, but without certainty I don't want to suggest my buddy do that.

    For fail.

The fact that Sony released a new update every month makes me think that a lot of the time it is just a coincidence. Since this update had nothing to do with the Blu-ray drive makes me believe that even more.

What this update did is let you copy your hard drive data from one PS3 to another just by plugging in a eternet cable between the two. Also enables the "Mini's" that were originally released for the PSPgo and PSP to be played on the PS3. (just like all PSP games should be)

A coincidence that happens immediately after the update though?

Or it is possible that it died before the update was applied you just assume that it was the update that killed it.

My point is there is no definite proof that it was the update that killed the drive, is it possible. Sure anything is possible. Is it plausible no I don't think so. The update did nothing to the firmware of the BluRay drive.

Take the RRoD for example. One day you could be playing a game and the next day you go to turn it on it Red Ringed. Just so happens that over night there was an update for the 360. Would you claim it was the Update that killed it? Or just the fact that it was coincidence.

Placing blame on something just because it is convent does not mean that it is the correct reason.

Every update ever released by Sony for the PS3 you always hear people crying that it killed their BluRay drive. Do I think it did? No. But again, does not mean it isn't possible.

Just because it didn't touch the BR drive doesn't mean it didn't fuck up the software on the system itself, that interfaces with the drive. I'm quite familiar with how computer hardware works.

What I know is that his machine was working quite fine prior to the update. Based on other PS3 forums, I found that it is pretty damn common.

That is the only reason I bothered posting it here. If others have fixed the issue by douching the system, like the internet suggests, I would have him try it.

    Thanks for your nothelp.

    your quite welcome.

maybe you should try searching every single update that PS3 released. every single one you will see poeple saying "OHH 3.10 KILLED MY PS3 WAAAAAHHHH"

or replace the 3.10 with any patch version number you like.

    It is all coincidence.

I've heard of other people having the same problem. iirc there is no fix, and if you contact Sony they will give you the runaround and eventually tell you to buy a new system.

Maybe your friend will have better luck though :dunno:

Stories like this almost make me wary of updating my PS3 fat to the latest firmware... I don't want mine to get messed up :wtc:

his is at least a year old. Mine is probably a bit older, and running fine after update too.

But, mine is the Metal Gear bundle, his isn't. Not sure if any of that matters.

Either way, I realize he's probably fucked. Just looking for OT experiences.

You have to realize most people will try to blame the manufacturer for every problem. There is no reason to suggest a firmware update will brick an optical drive. Unless of course a few hundred people complain about it, then everyone claims it in hopes that Sony will start fixing it for free.

Same shit happened to mine with one a while back. Whether or not the updates are the cause, the problem has been affecting more and more people and I've yet to see Sony do anything to address it. Their stance seems to be "if it's passed warrantee, pay us $150 to repair it or buy a new one". That in and of itself makes me want to tell Sony to suck a fat dick.

And I understand that. But from having no symptoms prior to the update, to being completely fucked after it, is fail on some part.

Had a similar problem just last week. I could tell my drive wasnt spinning the disk most of the time. It started when games would freeze at random points, and then the disk wouldnt read after a powerdown/restart.

and searching random posts online drove me to several potential fixes.

    - Back and reset back to factory settings - didnt fix it. The thought was the problem is with a curropted file (so, in theory, could be update related).
    - Clean the laser - didnt fix it. Obviously a long shot, since it wasnt spinning in the first place.

Mine was still under BB warranty, so I took it back and they swapped out a new one for me. Havent had any problems with the newest update on the new machine.
