Was his first day of training today. He's called his family 7 times already. He's completely freaking out, screaming at people, etc.

Told him it was a mistake for him to join - he runs from every confrontation he encounters, even if he's not even involved - but he flunked out of college (twice), was tired of working shitty jobs, etc.

What are his options? Apparently no officials are talking with him because of how he was freaking out earlier, etc.

    Is he stuck?

No, there is a 180 day clause in there if you can't adapt. But basically his DS and BCT chain of command would have to recognize that he is a lost cause and not worth corrective effort.

Tell him to tell them he's gay. /thread.

Tell him that his life is about to suck more than he ever dreamed it could suck. The fastest way for him to get out of basic training is for him to complete basic with the rest of his platoon. ANY OTHER WAY will end up with him staying much longer than everyone else.

    Period. End of story.

He's not worried about basic as much as he is being deployed somewhere.

What a piece of shit. Tell him to give up and just get the fuck out at all costs. We don't need people like that in our military.

Deployment is so sensationalized by the media. Yes, it is dangerous, but it's no more dangerous than many other places (including some in America).

It's fun, the pay is good, and it's emotionally rewarding. Tell him to cowboy the fuck up.

    This.

I remember going through basic and meeting some of the "hold-overs" on KP and those fuckers had already been there months and were still there when I graduated.

I mean...he picked a shitty time to start having these thoughts. its not like yesterday he had no military ideas and today woke up at basic. Im assuming this is months if not a year or more in the making.

Is he still in Reception or in actual Basic Training? Also, what is his MOS/Rate/AFSC and what branch is he in?

If he is not in reception but has already started Army BCT Training then he will not be able to quit. I would suggest that his friends and family send him letters of praise and encouragement. The training will be over soon enough and is usually the hardest part of one's Army career. Once he gets out of AIT and into his unit, it will be one of the best experiences of his life. BCT is usually the biggest shock to people. But afterwards, you learn that it taught you that you can handle things in the Army and in your civilian/personal life that much easier. -- You can take this with a grain of salt if you wish, but I believe this is the best advice on this subject.

Sounds like a pretty normal experience. He'll get over it.

+ 1, The fastest and easiest way is to just graduate. Tell him to just suck it up. BCT isn't even hard.
