d60 is limited to af-s lenses like the d40.

a d50 is a good choice for an entry level nikon that can use all lenses, i have one for sale, PM if interested

D60 and D40 are limited to AF-S type lenses for AF, but will work with many other nikon lenses without AF support.

I suggest said friend find his way to a camera store or electronics store with the cameras he's interested and he try them out. See which he feels is more comfortable, has a better interface (physical and electronic). Those are a matter of personal taste.

Canon and Nikon both have broad lens lineups but it's hard for a newbie (if they don't know anything yet) to decide which is better based on the limitations that exist in each lens system. Canon and Nikon both tend to offer some things that the other one isn't matching yet, but those are usually issues only apparent to certain people and they've usually been in the hobby or business for a while.

The Pentax K200d is worth checking out too IMO, not quite as much modern lens support but plenty of lenses from the past and overall the ergonomics and build of their entry level body is better than the Canon and Nikon IMO.

The limitations on Canon bodies are different. By design of the EOS system the AF motor has to be in the lens, Nikon didn't do that originally so the camera body had to have a motor. Nikon didn't put that AF motor in the D40 and D60 so they won't AF with a lens that doesn't have a built in AF motor.

Canon switched to the current mount (EF mount) in the later 80s so anything since then will mount on a Rebel XSi. The XSi will also take EF-S lenses though and those won't mount on every other Canon EOS camera.

If your friend just sticks to buying new/modern lenses for Canon they should all work. For Nikon, they may find some lenses which do not AF (Nikon has been updating some lenses so that is becoming less of an issue).

If he's gonna get into this like most people here do, then he needs a motor drive.

If it's gonna be a minimum investment hobby, the motor drive isn't really necessary.

For example, my mom and little sister would do fine with a d40/60. I would have went insane and switched to Pentax by now if I owned one of them.

well said...he is under a budget of what he is willing to spend. so hes getting into this as a minimum investment hobby. if he gets more into it he can sell it. i already told him what he wants/needs to know and what you guys have said

The Rebel XTi will AF with any Canon EF or EF-S lens which has autofocus. There are maybe a half dozen specialty lenses which don't have AF but the other 50 or 60 or so do have AF.

The D60 will not AF with the Nikon 50 1.8 or old 1.4 lenses. Nikon has a new 50 1.4 with the AF-S motor that will work, but it's more expensive.

yea...and hes leaning more towards going with the Xti pending how it feels in his hands...i told him to get play with one. since hes planning to get a 50mm lens..i think its better to go with canon. being a noob i think he will get annoyed that the 50mm 1.8D wont AF with a d60
