I think the e39's are still doable for shadetree mechanics. Not as easy to work on as my ol' M30, but still worth doing just so you know it got done right.

Parts prices are not as bad as everyone thinks, either.

Your friend has excellent taste. Now he just needs to sign up for BMWCCA driver's school:bigthumb:

He has a e34 530i so he's been to quite a few of the BMWCCA driving schools etc. He is really active in the bmw community.

people dont start appreciating BMWs until they've owned one, or is around one a lot... Before i had one (couple months ago), i thought they all looked the same on the road.. just a typical same BMW design every year.. but they're amazing.. down to every detail.

Oh yeah.. i looked into the BMW driving school as well... it's too expensive for me... about $2k for the standard lesson.

I had a 2000 540i 6-spd before my current M3. GREAT car! Have someone check out the cooling system, most importantly the upper radiator hose. Thats the weak link on his E39.

btw the 02 540i never came with an m-sport package in the US

it was just a sport package

msport package was only offered for 2003 in the US :)

but in anycase nice car! :)

Its so funny that the people who say things about BMW maint dont even have one. I have an 01 E39 with 110000 miles and the car runs like new.

gdawg, consider yourself lucky. Did you have a I-6 or a V-8 in your E39? Heres a list of the problems i had on my '00 E39 540i:

-the upper coolant line burst twice
-the driveshaft became unbalanced and required replacement
-the harmonic vibration in the driveshaft caused the pinion gear in the rear end to shear off requiring a new diff,
-the steering wheel position sensor died twice causing ABS and DSC to permanently disable until it was replaced

All that was before i traded it in with 60k miles. Granted I didn't drive it like a grandma but i respected the car i.e. no clutch drops, burnouts, etc. The I-6's are relatively bulletproof, but the V-8 powered 540 will require more maintenance. That being said, if i had to choose a 4-door sedan, i would get another one in a heartbeat! :)

I have a '96 e36 with 120k miles and it hasn't given me any trouble other than a bad thermostat which was very easy to replace. There's something to be said for a ten year old car that gets beat on and costs almost nothing to maintain.
