Computer was running slowly, though it's a P4 2.4 w/ 80% free HD space and 256 MB Ram, Win XP Home.

    I did the basics:
    1. Adaware
    2. Spybot
    3. Tuneup Utilities
    4. Defrag
    5. Disk Cleanup
    6. Virus Scan
    7. Highjack This
    Adaware found 300 items
    Spybot found 1980 items
Tuneup Utilities found a fair amount
    Defrag took FOREVER
Disk Cleanup found a small amount to clean
Antivirus found 2 items, then crashed. And crashed again. Antivir (and AVG Beforehand) wouldn't complete scans.
Highjack this wouldn't run at all. Kept giving errors.

And to top it all off, MSN Messenger will NOT connect, with the firewall off or on. She can surf the web fine, and do most anything, but MSN will not connect. We uninstalled, rebooted, and installed it again...same thing.

Any ideas what could be the problems / something else I may have missed?

Does this sound like a reformat/OS reinstall?

    Thanks!

Are you doing the scans and cleaning while in Safe Mode?

And not that it should be causing that many problems, but she really needs to think about getting atleast another stick of 256MB RAM. While it's possible to run XP at 128MB, it really shouldn't be anything less than 512MB ...IMO

No, scanning in regular mode. BUt she said the computer was working GREAT until about 2-3 weeks ago. And the only things plugged into it are her optical mouse and Camera dock. No printer, scanner, or other perhipherals.

    How many processes are running?

Format and reinstall might be the quickest and most reliable solution...

You need to run those scans in safe mode and make sure that Ad-Aware is set to run a deep system scan.

Running in Safe Mode helps so the bad guys can be removed easily, and with many things as you found there has to be some stuff still let behind. And by having Ad-Aware run the deep scan means it'll take more time and look more carefully. And again because of the high number of things found, it would be a really good idea.

Post the HJT log and I'll give it a look if you want. But post the one AFTER the Safe Mode scans.

Make sure system restore is turned off before you go through all that.

HJT wouldn't even run. It was missing a dll file. I hit google, downloaded the DLL, extracted it to the proper folder, redownloaded HJT, and it wouldn't run stating "An unexpected error has occurred"
    :dunno:

There is no reason HJT should be missing any DLLs.
Sounds like Windows is really screwed up.
Back up the best you can and just reinstall the OS.

Sorry -- it indicated that a required DLL was missing on the computer.

    Same difference.
Point being is that if HJT of all things is complainning about something missing any where so it can run, there is something wrong.

And I figured you meant that the missing DLL was missing from the OS, that is way I'm saying the OS is really and truely screwed. So backup, format, reinstall the OS.

Defragging is important not just because it organizes files, but because it requires the data on the HDD to be read, checked for errors, and fixed if necessary. That's something they don't tell you on the software box.

If she never defragged it, things like the system registry could have been sitting in the same spot on the HDD for years, slowly decaying as the disk platters lost their magnetic alignment. Past a certain point, the HDD can't read the data reliably anymore, and you start getting weird errors out of nowhere.

    Time to reformat.

Safemode you may also need to run scripen.exe which can be downloaded through microsoft. Also download WinsockxpFix.exe and run that.

Also run Windows Repair wizard. Also run all spyware/antivirus scans in safe mode.
