A little backstory may help here. My friend signed up for the National Guard last year, and completed basic last summer. While he was away, his house and all of his belongings, with the exception of his truck, burnt down. Nothing was salvageable. I did the best I could to help him out, gave him clothes, etc. The service gave him a hardship leave, and then yanked him around on when he was going back. He wound up getting married in the meantime. He just found out he's headed to AIT on May 15th.

With that out of the way, I'd like to do something nice for him before he leaves. I'm sure we'll do the usual going away party thing, but I'm wanting to do something a little extra. Mainly, I was thinking about getting a bunch of shit he could use while he's there. I know you're not really supposed to bring anything to basic, but I don't know if AIT is any different. Is it possible for him to bring shit with him, and if so, what would you guys recommend for me to get him? His MOS is going to be Light Mechanic if that helps at all. :hs:

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

i went to 63B school, it depends if he is going to jackson or aberdeen. if he goes to jackson they are pretty decent, you get brigade passes the first 3 weekends then post the next 3. off post the next three and off post over nights the last 3. we were allowed to have pretty much everything civvies, cell phones, laptops, cigatettes and most AITs allow that now. its not a terribly bad AIT jackson is pretty lax but it does get boring at times.. I dont know what I would get him.. a lot of people played PSP's like it was their life.. i just had my laptop.. one thing that would be very nice if hes got a laptop is to get a cellular card to connect to the internets so you dont have to pay a shitton to use the computers on post which are always being used and you have to wait like 20 moin just to get on.

he won't be, or at least shouldn't be, subject to the same rules as recruits in Basic. He can pretty much take anything he wants within reason. Don't go expecting that he'll be able to take a 60" plasma HDTV if he's living in the barracks either open bay or compartmentalized. He could get away with a small hand held game system, laptop or even a small tv and something like an Xbox etc. Ipods, cd players etc should all be good to use.

Every light mechanic I've met went to Edgewood, which is basically a part of Aberdeen Proving Grounds. I went to Aberdeen.... we were allowed to have cell phones and that's it. This was back in 2003, but also it's all up to the commander's discretion.

 Thanks for the replies. He's not into electronics very much, but I'd bet he'd enjoy a mp3 player or a handheld game system. I'll look into both of those. I'm not sure which he was headed to, I only got to talk to him for a few seconds yesterday and he just mentioned the date. Any other ideas along the lines of creature comforts or just anything that'd make life a little bit easier for him?

Actually, an MP3 player isn't a bad idea. Make sure to get him one that holds a lot of music, obviously he won't have too many chances, if any, to put more on. I'd recommend him to stay in during the weekends, don't go out wasting $$$ in the towns, B-more is 45 min away from Aberdeen. I think almost every weekend they had sponsored trips to DC, Philly, and even NYC once. Those were nice.

portable dvd players were the main item back during my AIT in 2005. of course, mine was 6 months long, so i was at ft. gordon for a loooong time. it sucked until i smuggled my car down.
