French troops 'ran out of ammunition' in Afghanistan
Ten French soldiers killed by Taliban fighters last month in Afghanistan were woefully ill-equipped, according to a report citing a classified Nato document.

The "secret" file quoted by a Canadian newspaper said that the French troops ambushed on Aug 18 in a valley east of Kabul did not have enough bullets, radios and other equipment to sustain them through two days of fighting.

The report is likely to fan tensions ahead of a French parliamentary debate over President Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to send extra troops to Afghanistan. It promises to be heated, but Mr Sarkozy's decision will be approved as his ruling centre-right UMP party holds a strong majority.

According to the report cited by the Globe and Mail newspaper, the troops were forced to abandon a counter attack when the weapons on their vehicles ran out of ammunition only 90 minutes into the battle. One French platoon had just one radio, which was quickly knocked out, leaving them powerless to call for reinforcements.

The dead soldiers from that platoon "showed signs of being killed at close range", the report said.

By contrast, it said that the insurgents were well prepared and equipped, with expert snipers who appeared to have used incendiary bullets designed to punch holes in armour.

Nato and the Paris government denied the existence of such a report.

"Neither the secretary general (Jaap de Hoop Scheffer) nor indeed Nato headquarters has any knowledge of such a report's existence. After some research we are still unable to find any evidence of such a report," said a Nato spokesman.

"Nato has 100 percent, full confidence in the capabilities, training and equipment of French forces," he added.

"There was no Nato report," said a French army spokesman, saying such information was based on "rumours" possibly fed by "partial" accounts from soldiers questioned after the attack. He denied that the troops ran out of ammunition quickly and said that radio reception was only lost for a few minutes

  2. It's surprising they fired enough rounds to run out.

90 minutes is one hell of a long time to be in a gunfight. Especially when most encounters are relatively brief. Standard US load used to be about 210 rounds, and maybe an extra bandolier of 200 or so. Shit gets heavy after a while.

How many rounds do we piss through in an hour just fucking around with our AR-15's? 90 minutes of sustained contact would eat up a shitload of ammunition. They aren't just sitting there taking careful aim with each shot. You gotta provide supressing fire, shoot at the goon trying to flank you just to change his mind about it much less hit him, etc. That's if they are pinned down. Fire and maneuver eats up even more since most of your ammo is spent making the other guy keep his head down so your guys can move to a new position.

  9. That's complete bullshit that they are expected to be in those conditions with that little ammunition.

Sounds so similar to the slaughter of a small detachment of US troops expected to hold a hill for two days in Afghanistan. Who the fuck makes these decisions and why aren't they held accountable?

    If they're using the FAMAS, it's a 5.56.

Afghanistan Taliban Fighters Ambush French Troops
Taliban fighters are seen in the Al-Shing district in Laghman province, Afghanistan, on Tuesday September 1, 2008. On the 18th of August, the French soldiers on a patrol in Uzbeen valley were ambushed by the insurgents. Ten French soldiers were killed as well as one of their translator. Commander Farooki who is part of the Emirati Islami gathering the Taliban, the Hezb-i-Islami, the Tora Bora front and Al Qaeda took part in the ambush with his men. As a proof, some of his men are showing two Famas, French rifles, that they took from the dead bodies of the soldiers. The complete uniform worn by one of the fighters (pictured, center) was bought at the bazaar. They also gave me the watch of one of the dead soldier who was given back to his family. They are in Al Shing district in Laghman province, a few miles away from Spir Kundey where the attack took part. Their General quarter is only a few meters away in a village. Their message was for all the French soldiers to leave by the end of Ramadan otherwise, they will all be killed.
