I'm thinking of going to france next year to join the foreign legion.

I was in the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) for 2.5 years and I was Catergory DF discharged (what they would call a dishonourable discharge in the states) for failing 2 drug tests (smoking pot).

I regret this every day, and I miss the structure and discipline of a military environment, because of my discharge I can't join any service again in New Zealand, so I see the foreign legion as my only option. (I don't smoke pot anymore btw)

Has anyone here served in the foreign legion, or know anyone else who has?

    any thoughts/opinions on this?

Sounds like a good idea as long as you're okay with leaving New Zealand permanently.

Don't think the Foreign Legion is your only option though, if you came to America as a legal alien with a green card, you would be eligible to join any of the US branches (arny, navy, Marines, air force, coast guard). I don't think what happened with your discharge in the New Zealand navy would have any effect on you being able to join the US armed forces.

I too have thought about the FFL.

Missions undertaken by the FFL are considerd "Suicide Missions". Lots of men have lost friends while oversea's. When sent don't expect to come back, you are typically sent to the shitholes where life is pretty much worthless. You will be stationed at French Colonies such as the Ivory Coast and other african nations.

    Here's some tips:

There is no such thing as a dishonourable or honourable discharge in the NZDF.

It is hard core, the french foreign legion are pretty much consider'd special forces for what they hafto go through. Out of all the basic infantry in the world (Paratroopers/Snipers/Infanteer's) they are people you do not want to fuck with. I've herd from friends who are in sf's and have said themselves "FFL personal are crazy, and I mean crazy in a bad way not like us" ( :hsugh: ).

If you're ever in france and you see one give him the respect he deserves. Because he's been through the toughest of tough. And if you get in a fight with one don't plan on ever winning, these fuckers will tear you a new one.

You don't need to be a citizen to join the U.S. military, you just need a green card which isn't hard to get.

The reason the French Foreign Legion are such hardcore badasses is because most of the people in the Legion aren't from France :bigthumb:.

Dude, it's a fact that you can join any branch of the military as long as you have a green card. As far as how easy it is to get one, if you have a friend or family member that already lives in the US, they can petition for you and it'll really speed up the process and increase your chances (I know this because my cousin in Canada did this and my parents petitioned for him).
