Is there any free SMTP software out there that would come closest to equaling Exchange? Preferably for Windows server, but Ubuntu Server or bare metal would work as well too.

Full exchange functionality is VERY far reach from just SMTP. If all you really want is to relay mail, then just run sendmail or something similar that's been around forever.

    All I think I would use is SMTP with IMAP and POP3. I don't need Exchange's calendar/events/public folder/etc. features.

Look at MailEnable... the free version gives you SMTP and POP3, have to get professional or enterprise edition to add IMAP functionality.

For a Linux box, just run Exim and Courier.
