I would love a more compact camera for hiking, backpacking, climbing, etc and these seem to be right up my ally.

how quick/responsive are these things? how much control will I have? any recommendations?

All I can say is between Panasonic or Olympus, go with Panasonic. Ive played with both and theyre ok but I personally couldnt bring myself to spend the money right now on one when I could put it towards something else for my SLR. Theyre quicker then most P/S cameras but theyre still just an oversized P/S that is using contrast detection to focus.

I've been looking at the GF1 but it's kind of too much $

also looked at the sigma's but they got bad reviews

also been looking at the leica dlux4 which is a step below (has a small sensor). seems like it could take some good pics: http://www.boxedlight.com/dlux4/index.htm

ok not that any of you care about micro 43 cams but I ordered the GF1 today.

I got fed up trying to scan slides and negatives and the GF1 was exactly what I was looking for.

yup. fucking killed me. I was going to wait a while... it should drop. They seem to be in high demand.

I just couldn't wait– I'm going to be on one big road trip come spring/summer. I figured if I kept shooting film this would be cheaper in the long run :hs:
