When I first saw the listing I thought $225 for a good condition D70 with 50mm 1.8 was a great deal, but I've done some searching online and now I'm just not sure. I was going to buy it and then either ebay it or my D40x, and hopefully make a little profit.

I'm sick and tired of most of my lenses not autofocusing on my D40x, but is the D70 a huge downgrade?

Any other opinions on whether I should buy the D70?

the d70 is noisier, but otherwise it's a pretty sweet body. look up the specs online and compare it to your d40x. go to dpreview.com

I'll check that out once I get out of class, thanks. I already have a 50mm 1.8, I could possibly sell the extra and afford to keep both bodies. Even though I really don't need both :o

I think one of the things thats gonna piss you off the most is the TINY LCD. Otherwise, I loved my D70 til the day it stopped working. You can never go above 400ISO though, it gets ugly fast.

It doesn't look like I'll be getting this one now anyway :wtc: She said there was a "pricing error" and wants $275 for it now, and I don't think I'm willing to spend that much. I'd rather sell my D40x and buy a D80, or wait a few months and get a D300.

Now I'm reconsidering the D70, I can't make up my damn mind :o

I have a "service plan" on my D40x that covers accidental damage, but since the D40x is discontinued I would supposedly get a D60 if my D40x was "accidentally damaged" beyond the point of in-store repair. . .Every time I look at the Best Buy website and see that the D60 with 18-55mm VR lens costs $200 less than what I paid for my D40x with non-VR lens, my hands get a little shaky :mamoru:

I'm thinking about buying the D70 and then selling the D40x/D60, so I can come out of this with a good camera and a little cash. If I wasn't a broke college student I'd just buy a D300 :wtc:

the 50/1.8 lens typically retails for about 110-130 depending on where you look and can often be found for 75-100 used. So if think about it that way you're getting the body pretty damned cheap

Yeah, I think I paid around $115 for my 50mm 1.8 at a local camera shop. I finally decided against buying that D70 simply because I don't want to spend my money on a camera that isn't even really an upgrade to my current setup. I'll just be patient and wait until I can afford a D300 or better.

Plus I had a $150 gift card to B&H from Christmas 2007, so I chipped in another $35 and bought an SB-600  That should keep me entertained for awhile, and it's definitely an upgrade to my Vivitar 283. Now I just need to put my sound trigger back together and take some more high-speed photos with the SB-600 :naughty:

I'd say just sell your D40 and get a D90. Almost the same as a D300 for less money
