What did you do to get your community rolling? How long did it take you to actually establish a comunity with repeat visitors; did you use Adwords, link building, referral prizes, just build good content, or all of the above?

A lot of forums gain traction because they are spin-offs of other forums. Community leaders think they can do a better job, or see a related subject and build upon it, drawing members from old existing forums.

That is how all my forum building experiences have gone. Was an administrator at a 100k+ filesharing forum (not the owner, but a co-admin), and I split with some moderators and created a new better one. We had thousands of users within a week, just from our previous forums.

Did the same thing with a technology forum, but a smaller scale. (25k users vs 100k).

That's just my experiences in forum/community building.

That's pretty much how it goes with forums... But just because you are on one forum, doesn't mean you can't be on another.

I've had my forum ... www.miami-forum.com ... for about 6 months and haven't been able to get it going. I ended up starting a blog on the same subject ( www.miami-forum.blogspot.com ), which is doing really good. I don't know why the blog is doing so much better than the forum ... maybe because its part of a larger blogging community ... dunno

I just changed the layout today! I was hoping for compliments! :squint:

I like the colors, up until today it was a light blue. I prefer darker colors ... I just need a better logo .... I suck at photo shop.

Yeah, he thought we bailed on him. He didn't do anything, and I ran everything. Then he wouldn't implement changes I wanted, so I said fuck it.

I won in the end. :o

I have via: Search Engines, Business Cards and submitting threads to Digg. Although I really haven't handed out that many business cards.

That's what happens when you don't listen to your members. He had it coming. Nicely done.

That right there sums it up. THis is why its hard to start a forum unless you start something that isn't already thought of or have something better to offer. Everywhere you look today there are blogs and forums of just about anything from fanatics to the obsessed pornoviewer. Kinda hard to promote forums so I haven't created any lately I know a few forums that got started via traffic from OT.. direct linking, every other thread etc etc

exactly! I was a member on a forum and noticed a niche market that a lot of people liked, but that forum flamed them. So, since I actually owned and liked the product as well, I start a forum based on it. I got an affiliate deal with the product parent company and now when someone uses my referral to purchase a product form this company I make 10% of the order purchase price.

i have a forum with some friends, it is going slowly, but we like it.
about 36 users now, about 12 regulars...

    friends tell friends tell friends.

I wouldn't care if there were 10 users if everyone had a good time.
