Ok so this month I just broken even of what I spent last year in creating the forum...

but now i plan on upgrading to a VPS server in Liquid Web ($60/month) (right now i got economy plan in Godaddy, and it gets real slow at times...)

But I sure dont make that much money with the adsense...maybe around $20-$25/month

so Im thinkin of creating some kind of membership fee or something...

This is how big my forum is, has been online since September 15, 2006

paid subs for key features always help.

    search/avatars/sig pics/ad removal etc.

It's hard to make money off forums with adsense because of no uniques.

I've been running a very small forum for a circle of friends for half a decade or so now, and never once even broken even on it - though I don't have any ads. Just get donations every now and then

CTR is generally low on forums .. if people want to pay for a subscription, go for it :dunno:

Have you made a donation link readily available?

Maybe put banners at the top and state that any donation will have the banners removed. People dislike scrolling down.

Maybe have an open thread regarding ongoing server costs. If you have loyal followers they will normally jump in and help. If people don't know that money is being spent to keep the site up, they normally don't even think twice about it. Some people are still ignorant to the idea of the internet and websites costing money.

You can earn a hell of a lot of money from forums, just needs steady active users.

Make it almost annoyingly available. Do this until you get your monthly quota, and then back off. Like i said, possibly make a thread regarding your needs. Members are normally more than willing to help if they know the situation and they are loyal to your site.

I run a local car site, and just sell ad space to local shops for 20 a month, 15 a month if they pay 6 months in advance. Paid off my VB lifetime liscence by March. Every cost after that is profit. :) (we paid 200 bucks for the domain name and 180 for VB, its hosted on a buddys server)

I run a specific guitar brand related forum. I run auctionads keyword for that particular brand guitar and I run my affiliate banner for that guitar brand.

income from the site is really slow over the summer but around oct through may it really picks up monetary wise.
