I made my boot disc off of windows 98,
the format I used was format c:/q

i did all that, then put in the cd rom, and it went through the windows installation and when it was done, it rebooted and went to the xp load screen, but did not go to the log in screen, it was all black

can anyone help me trouble shoot this problem

    thanks

Not sure on your exact problem, but if you are going to format and install XP, boot off of the XP CD and have Windows setup format the drive for you. That way you can setup an NTFS partition.

The XP load screen, or the Win98 load screen? Because if you format your HD with the a Win98 disk, and use the system files, when you boot up it will flash the Win98 splash screen and give you the C:\> prompt

But yeah - no need to make a boot disk in the first place...

Why are you using a windows 98 bootdisc to format if you're loading a XP cd? Just boot offa the xp cd and format using that, I've seen xp mess up sometimes because it's using a fat32 system, which is what you get using a 98 bootdisc. Try it with NTFS and see if that helps. If not hold down F8 and see if you can boot into safe mode atleast.

Yea, reinstall and format drive clean. Better with NTFS sturcture. Forget FAT32.
