I am formatting my work laptop right now and it's taking forever. I deleted the old partiton on the drive and made a fresh new one. I selected format full for ntfs in the winXP setup. It sat at 0% for about 5 minutes and I was about to just restart and start over thinking it froze. Then it finally went to 1% and now it's at 4% after 15 minutes. Seems extremelly slow and I'm not sure if something is wrong.

It's a toshiba laptop, 2.5ghz with over a gig of ram. Does this sound normal or is there a setting off? I've formatted a slower Dell laptop and it did a full format in about 20 minutes, at this rate with the toshiba one it will take over 2 hours.

the full format option takes a much longer time. the full format checks the disk for errors as it goes.

laptop is a piece of shit.

one XP sp2 disk with updates til dec. 07 would blue screen during the file copy process, irql something error. another disk copied all the files then just hung for about 30 min on the initializing part.

removed the upgrade gig stick of ram thinking this was causing the issues maybe. now its copying files from the disk that would crash before. some of the files wont copy though which seems weird. im just skipping over those and hoping this shit works. lol

Okay I cleaned the cd rom, figured maybe it was dirty and wasn't copying the files.

After cleaning it the files all copied, not one error or anything. After the files copied though the setup just froze. It was right after the copy part, it said initializing hivesft.inf and then just hung up.

    anyone have any ideas?

okay well i tried installing XP for the 5th time just now. for some reason all the files copied, it got past the hive files loading, and then it restarted and now it's installing like a normal install.

I am so confused right now. same cd that froze during the copying the first time, wouldn't load a ton of files, and now it works perfect.

    very strange

    computer is up and running.

looks like the CD drive was to blame. after that was cleaned it all installed and went well.
