Form over function: Mazda 3 gauges

One thing I noticed on my drive of the Mazda 3 were the gauges. While pleasing to look at while sitting in the car, their actual readability was poor while driving. The first thing that got me was the speedometer.

I have marked typical areas on the gauge that you'd actually be likely to drive on a consistant basis. Notice that the important numbers are crammed down there at the bottom with little needle movement.

Another point is the tachometer. It is small, and stuffed in the corner of the cluster. Also, the tach and fuel guage are loaced physically further away meaning your eyes must readjust just to scan the gauges in entirety. There is a black area on the left side of the pod that contains the tach which seems like wasted space. In practice the font isn't optimal and the redline area blends into the markings.

Another important thing to mention is that these gauges aren't as big as they may appear. They are quite a bit smaller than most cars, making them harder to read from the begining.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the whole tri-pod dash design. I drove a new (R230) SL500 today...the guages speedometer was hard to read. The numbers were in the right places, but curvy covers on top just pissed me off.

I can see why you dislike them...look good but poor design, just like every other mazda

The first time I put on the turn signals I thought something was broken. It makes a sound you'd expect from a 1980's full-sized van, not something that looks like the 3.

The 6's gauges are OK, but vanish as soon as you turn on the lights while there is still a little daylight.

:ugh: I thought the gauges were extremely large, and the red hue that blasts when you turn the car on is awesome. The display is very bright and easy to read IMO.

The Mazda 3 gauges are VERY similar to the Vibe/Matrix gauges... I agree with you on the Speedometer part, as it took me a while to get used to when I would drive my brothers Vibe GT...Once you get used to it, it doesn't bother you at all...

As for the tach, how big does it need to be? I've driven plenty of stickshift cars that don't even have tachs without a problem...

Personally, the only gauge I ever look at in either of my trucks are the fuel gauges...My truck's are both 5 speeds, and I know by the sound of the motor and what gear I'm in how fast I'm going... :dunno:

You sure do find the smallest things to be picky about...

The 6 has gauges which are always illuminated. That illumination dims greatly when the headlights come on.

Who wants to fiddle with the knob that often? Turn it up to full brightness ar dusk/dawn, then turn it down as the sun goes down.

A tach is a must on something that is "sporty". The clearer and more prominent, the better.
