Not my pics, but the 4 times I've been to the South Store I've only brought my camera once.

The dude in the Red hat in last pic is Leon (CMP Armorer) knows practically everything when it comes to Garands/Carbines

The dude in the black shirt on the right comes to the CMP every Wednesday and buys 4-5 M1 Carbine's definetly knows his shit, in fact he help me pick out my Saginaw.

The black dude is another CMP armorer, he's foreign (not sure where from) but knows his shit and can strip a Carbine or Garand in seconds and tell you what every stamp means.

If any WMD'ers live anywhere near the South Store (Alabama) you're a fool for not visiting these fine folks.

what would an average price be for a "decent" (?) quality garand that would be a solid shooter? also, what manufacturers should i be looking at?

Depends on if you want WWII vintage or not. Service Grade ($595) gives you the best combo of quality/shooter. Problem is neither CMP store is selling service grade in store, only by mail order, and the wait is 180 days+ Also the HRA service grades have been pulled from mail order for 6-12 months until the CMP fills all the orders. Unless you can visit the store spending $495 on a field grade is crap shoot, you might get lucky and get a good shooter, chances are you won't and the barrel will be shot out.

HRA's are Korean War era rifles, Springfield are both WWII and Korea depending on serial number. Anything Springfield under serial number 3,888,081 is WWII. Winchesters are guaranteed WWII but they are sold out by mail order and the Winnies they have in the store are rack grades and they look like shit and have shit barrels. My suggestion is submit an order for a service grade Springfield (assuming you meet CMP requirements) and wait your turn.

Average price for a private party CMP certified service grade are around $700-$900

I was tempted to try to make the trip when I was near atlanta. I just can't bring myself to spend $600 on a beat up shot out old gun yet. Thats most of my new accupoint fund.

Can any random person walk into a CMP and buy one? I was thinking you had to have proof of marksmanship or something like that. We've got one here in Ohio that I've been thinking about visiting.

Tell me about the Special grades, too.

I am hoping that as the gun buying crazes dies down, they may put service grades back onto the shelves sometimes next year, if that happens I may take a trip up there are select one for myself.

There are requirements but it isn't too bad. Just some paperwork, join an approved rifle club, do some shooting, and such. :o

    It is so worth it.
