I've been concentrating more on front squats, but also doing regular back squats, box, ATG, high box...

Is there any strength benefit in doing overhead squats?

I've been looking at videos and it looks like you BTN push press up to lock out, then start squatting, using a very wide grip on the bar.

not really. they work your "core," and a tool for developing overhead strength for the snatch.

in on this...the past 2 weeks front squats have been causing me to have shoulder pain on bench day. Need an alternative. Resting the bar on my delts btw, not clean grip

how about back squats? the limiting factor of the overhead squat is not leg strength, making them not really effective for building leg strength...

    I do

    back squats (5/3/1)
    pull through or good morning
    front squats
single leg squats on the smith

I'd really like another free weight compound movement if I'm going to stop doing front squats. I dont exactly understand how putting weight on the delt makes it hurt (only on one side) then next day when i do bench ROM...but thats the only thing it could be.

but :werd: on overhead squats....I tried them with 95 lbs once, and it was damn hard to control the bar, my arms and abs were strained much more than my legs were.

If you have an AC joint issue then front squats will bother it.

OHS will build strength and balance but they aren't really ideal to use just as a "leg" exercise. It would be easiest to do them off the rack. Go up to the bar as if you are going to do BS but use a snatch grip. PP the weight over head, stabilize and squat. If you aren’t flexible enough start off with a stick or else you might hurt your shoulders. More likely than not you and/or the weight will fall forward. Just make sure you hold the weight “behind your ears” and push up with your arms as you go down with your legs. If your arms aren’t locked out all the way down and all the way up you won’t be stable. If you can, hold it at the bottom position for 3 sec then squat up. Finally, if you get good at these try DSOHS (Drop snatch Over Head Snatch) to OHS. Basically you give the weight a little “push” up with your legs and drop under the weight as quickly as possible. This will mimic the catch position of the snatch without having to worry about pulling. Then follow up with 2 OHS. This shit will work everything.

I feel as if I personally lack the flexibility to do overhead squats effectively, i don't personally se the point as a leg exercise, but if you are after balance, they could be a powerful asset.

Don't see the point in overhead squats for non-olympic lifters.

I just do a few dynamic stretches and use light weight before deadlifts or squats.

leg press it out if you dont feel comfortable .. if your form fucking sucks or it doesn't feel right .. why move the bar to where it'll choke you the fuck out until you die if you screw up
