I highly recommend watching Louis Theroux's documentaries done for BBC  I've watched about 10 so far and not only do they cover some really interesting subjects, but I've learned a lot by watching how Louis interacts with the people around him. The man is skilled at listening and taking in all the info around him, asking open-ended and poignant questions, and applying a solid vacuum while waiting for people to answer. His interest in people and their stories is also obviously genuine.

Despite some very pointed and deep questions, people open up and answer. He also seems to develop friendships with everybody he meets and is quite likable.

I personally started watching these about a week ago and have made it a point to mimic his behaviors. I've always been pretty good at getting people to talk (and to listen, since I tend to talk more) but I've noticed a huge change in the dynamics of my conversations! There are people that I've known for a long time, but learned more about them in the past week than I knew in the years before. It's crazy.

It's one thing to hear "ask open-ended questions" and quite another to witness it done on the professional level. I highly suggest giving these documentaries a watch. :bigthumb:

Here is a thread with links to some of the videos. You can also find them on torrents/newsgroups (search Louis Theroux or Weird Weekends).

There is one on bodybuilding, though it focuses more on women's muscle worship :mamoru: It's pretty interesting and worth a watch

The one on hypnosis features Ross Jeffries among other people and is one of the better ones I've seen

Sometimes he's a bit snide and condescending, but it's understandable considering he talks to white supremacists and other douche bags. You're right though, generally speaking he has a good attitude..people really seem to respond to his eye contact/body language and he's open minded and usually up for trying anything.

I'll admit that I suck at listening/eye contact unless I have a specific agenda like trying to get a chick's number or whatever. Maybe I'm just a self-centered prick.

after watching about three of them I was like "this guy can get anybody talking :eek3:" so I started to pay attention to how he asked questions. I went out that night and tried it... ended up meeting and talking to a lot of people I never would have otherwise (ie guys ) and my conversations with men/women were great

one guy I met is a very successful entrepreneur and a great contact to have. I would have never had the drive to get him talking. I hung out with him today, pretty cool.

yeah, exactly. It happens to me pretty often too and I always walk away hating myself for a couple minutes :hs:

growing up I was really, super shy. It's taken a lot of effort to where I've gotten now.

This guy reminds me of me

Talking to the racist guy in part 5 of the Nazi episode. The white supremacist has a non-white friend from Peru.

Louis: "I felt warmth between you two"
    Nazi: "That's just common courtesy..."
Louis:"Do you really not see what I'm trying to see?"
Nazi: "I see what you're trying to say but I think your brain is twisted"
Louis: "I think your brain is twisted"
Nazi: "Well then we agree. We both agree that each others brains are twisted"
Louis: "Yeah, but the facts are on my side. You have friends who are non-white."

    :bowrofl:

Using logic to win arguments... so obviously these techniques wouldn't work when dealing with women.

I'm still gonna watch the rest of these, tho, just because they're interesting and I like seeing morons get schooled with logic.
