im a film edit major and i need to buy a new computer this summer. I already have a HP laptop for web browsing/music and whatnot and I'm wondering which Mac to get for editing. I know a dual G5 would be my best bet but sadly, that is out of my pricerange. I'm looking at spending about 1000 dollars (for now) and am curious if a older g4 powermac would work...and if so which model would be good for starters...keep in mind over the years i will upgrade the hardware/software..

Older DP G4 would be great. Mostly you limitation will be HD speeds, but you wont be able to do live renders.

sorry im a noob..whats a DP?...and i could always uprage the HD right?

would a dual 500 g4 work?..i was thinking of getting that with about a gig of ram and upgraded HD...

at school i use the old blue g3 towers (i think) and they run FCP 3 just fine..just long render times

i go to the academy of art in san francisco. not too sure of other schools, it was either this school or full sail in florida. i heard full sail is really good, but i believe they only offer an AA in film
