FONTANA - A 58-year-old homeowner was fatally shot Wednesday morning when he interrupted an apparent burglary at his Fontana residence.

Ronald Saxton arrived at his home in the 15500 block of Iris Drive, a recently incorporated area north of Valley Boulevard, at 10 a.m. Noticing something suspicious outside, he walked around the house to the back yard, said Fontana police Sgt. Doug Wagner.

He was confronted by an unknown suspect who shot him, Wagner said. Saxton was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where he died a short time later.

"He's a genuine homeowner who came home, interrupted most likely a burglary in progress and was shot and killed for it," Wagner said. "This is just wrong."

Detectives found evidence that the suspect or suspects had broken into Saxton's home through the rear, Wagner said. It's unknown whether anything was taken.

Five minutes after Saxton was shot, someone called 911 and said, "I think my neighbor's been shot," Wagner said.

The victim lived with his family but was alone at the time.

By Wednesday evening, detectives had no solid description of the suspect, did not know if there was more than one or the means of escape.

"We need witnesses, somebody who may have seen something," Wagner said. "We need the public's help."

Anyone with information is asked to call Fontana police Detective Cliff Ohler at 909-350-7723 or 909-350-7713.

Should of called the cops if he saw something suspicious, wasn't smart to investigate it himself unarmed :(
