I've always wondered why ram prices are always so fickle in relation to other types of hardware. I was recently looking at some 512 sticks of DDR 400 from Crucial and it's jumped up and down like crazy over the past few months.

Anyone know the reasoning behind price spikes for ram?

Supply and demand. I don't know if you remember, but there was a time when some factories in Asia, Korea or Taiwan or something, that made the IC's for memory were down for some reason, environmental I think and RAM prices were sky high.

It's all about supply and demand.

Earthquakes in Japan have caused RAM prices to spike on more than one occasion.
