Flaxseed vs. Fish oil-- stop wasting your money

    Long story short: Flaxseed (alpha-linolenic acid conversion to omega-3) is not an efficient way to to get your omega-3 fix (namely DHA).

    I have seen a lot of people getting their vegetable omega-3 sources from flaxseed around here and in the world outside of OT. Many of you might be aware of this, but if flaxseed is a staple of your diet, maybe you will want to just move over to fish oil caps (emphasize Omega-3, you're probably good on Omega-6 already).


    Cliffs: Fish oil > Flaxseed for getting Omega-3


    Below are a couple pubmed articles, but there are plenty more out there. Apparently Flaxseed might not be good for men with higher risk of prostate cancer as well.

    I think of flax as mainly a source of fiber. I don't take the oil as I've heard bad things related to estrogen and such.

    I thought it was sort of common knowledge now that fish oil is better than flaxseed for omega-3.

    Fish oil is a much better source for omegas. I don't think people should eliminate flax seeds either though. Adding some ground up flax to your shakes, or yogurt will only benefit you.

    I take fish oil pills in the morning and add flax seed oil to my mid day salad :greddy:

    Yeah it's pretty well known around these parts but not a bad idea to reiterate it, esp. for those who drop dough on flaxseed trying to get omega-3.

    Better than any of the "what should I do to cut" threads
